I Believe; I Can Fly

University of St. Thomas 2022 Campus Update

Most notably featured in the movie Space Jam, we hear these famous lyrics:

“I used to think that I could not go on. And life was nothing but an awful song. But now I know the meaning of true love. I'm leaning on the everlasting arms. If I can see it, then I can do it. If I just believe it, there's nothing to it. I believe I can fly!”

St. Thomas students at our Summer Training Project

Though the intention behind this song was to inspire us to find belief in ourselves, I believe that there are more profound undertones in these lyrics. As students at St. Thomas taste more and more of what the world has to offer, they become disappointed and don’t know if they can go on. Life seems like it’s nothing but an awful song, leaving us dissatisfied. But when our eyes are opened to the beauty of the gospel, Christ’s sacrifice on our behalf, we know the meaning of true love. We can lean on the Everlasting’s arms.

Wednesday Night Real Talk

This past year we’ve seen 6 students brought from death to life. They’ve tasted the better water that Jesus offers. More than that, they’ve been welcomed into a community of other Christians on campus to help them grow in their love for Jesus and be on mission together to share the gospel.

So no, we cannot find life by believing in ourselves. We find life by believing in Jesus’ sufficient sacrifice for us. If we just believe it, that there’s nothing more to add to it, then we can freely fly towards Jesus and love those around us.

Student Quote

“God has been showing me ways I need to grow as well as growing me in these areas. It was clear that there were ways I prioritized other things before my walk with God, and as I’ve made a more intentional effort to spend time with him, I’ve experienced a deeper intimacy with God and therefore a deeper joy and a heart for those who are lost.”
